Recognizing industry Leaders, Visionaries and Change Makers
Many of you may know George from the Limericks that have been retold at the AFS Dinners over the years but do not know the man.
George was born in 1928.
He started working for Jobber News in 1978 and in the late 80’s left to start up his own publication which was called Automotive Report. It was a 4-page flyer, similar to the “Greensheet” that many in the aftermarket grew dependent upon for what was happening in the industry. Obviously this was well before social media, so a vital communication piece for many.
Some say that the reason he had to keep publishing a new issue was to correct the errors in the last one.
After a period of time George had a conversation with Shirley Brown and he went to work with Shirley at her publication, Aftermarket Canada. Shirley commented that he helped her business immensely and she was very vocal that he worked with her; not for her.
George was married to his wife Maxine. He had a very good relationship with his wife Maxine, who occasionally would dress him down in front of a crowd. The look on his face was priceless and you knew he was listening but just paying homage. George had a wonderful singing voice and appeared at many churches in the GTA, as well as some industry events, showcasing his pipes.
A good man and great at what he did. Knew everyone and got along with everyone. He was kind and generous, very courteous, especially when women were present.
George was described as very mischievous, almost like a leprechaun! George was 82 when he passed in February 2010, I then took over the Secretarial reins at the AFS.
George was renowned for his unique limericks, which became an ongoing key part of the AFS for years.
